One and two dimensional problems in heat conduction are illustrated below. These are classic problems of heat
conduction and diffusion that reveal the space-time behavior of a cooling system. There is also an interactive exercise
that describes the cooling of an intrusive dike and allows the user to change key parameters and see the result brought
about by the change.
One Dimensional Problems:
- Example 1: Semi-infinite solid with an initial temperature f(x).
- Example 2: Semi-infinite solid with initial temperature of zero and surface p(t).
- Example 3: Thermal evolution of a dike and adjacent country rock.
Two Dimensional Problems:
- Example 1: Infinite prism with constant temp T and outside temp initially zero.
- Example 2: Cooling of the Lithosphere Adjacent to a Mid-Ocean Ridge.
